This past November the Northeast Clark County 4-H program hosted our first Turkey Week! The week started off with a community 5K that they named the “4-H Turkey Trot” this event had 5 different families come and compete in this healthy living activity. Participant, Tricia Wickersham said, “It was a VERY cold event but it was a great opportunity to get moving with my family and walk alongside new and old friends all while supporting a local youth program.”
The next two days were focused on S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities at the local University of Nevada, Cooperative Extension Office. The youngsters that attended the event were able to make slime and learn about the proper hand cleaning techniques to avoid “Bad Bugs” or germs.
On Thursday, November 20, 2015 the 4-H celebrated each other’s accomplishments throughout the past 4-H year during their first annual 4-H Achievement Night. This event was held at the Overton Old Gym and was a success! Many families attended this event as well as Assemblyman Chris Edwards, Nevada 4-H State Director- Carrie Stark, 4-H Staff from Las Vegas and an intern for Congressman Cresent Hardy.
The evening also celebrated the many assets to 4-H including 4-H Volunteer of the Year, Nathan and Deborah Henrie.
The 4-H held contests that showcased a variety of life skills which included a portfolio keeping contest and an interview contest. The winners of these contests are: Portfolios- Senior: Anna Stratton; Intermediate: Ryan McMurray, Odin Lyman, Kennen Staton; Junior: Iain McMurray, Victoria Herring, Taytum Yardley; Interview Contest: Senior: Whitney Wickersham, Bailey Kesl; Intermediate: Trey Houston, Joey Herring; Junior: Emma Houston, Victoria Herring. Each winner received a certificate from Congressman Hardy and a picture with Assemblyman Chris Edwards.
On Friday, the 4-H Ambassadors hosted a fun community dance called the, “Turkey Wobble.” A great time was had by all in attendance.
